Accessibility
This portfolio website is designed with accessibility in mind, reflecting the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles I studied in MUS 689 with Prof. Wagner-Yeung and apply daily in my classroom at Wings Academy.
Design Choices
- High-contrast color scheme (light text on dark background) with gold accents that meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratios
- Readable font sizes with responsive scaling across devices
- Semantic HTML structure with proper heading hierarchy
- All images include descriptive alt text; decorative ornaments are marked
aria-hidden - Interactive elements (links, buttons, filters) are keyboard-navigable
- Navigation includes both desktop menu and mobile hamburger menu
- All portfolio documents are available as downloadable PDFs
- Embedded videos (YouTube) provide auto-generated captions; captions can be toggled in the player
Document Accessibility
Portfolio documents are provided as PDF files. Most were generated from structured Word documents with proper heading styles, which preserves reading order for screen readers. Some documents include pasted content from classroom materials that may have limited screen reader compatibility.
Known Limitations
- Some Component X materials (PowerPoint presentations, photos) are visual in nature and may not be fully accessible to screen readers
- The Component XIII qualitative data PDF includes coded interview transcripts that use color coding for thematic analysis – color is not the sole indicator, as each code is also labeled with text
- Component IV teaching videos are hosted on YouTube; accessibility features rely on YouTube’s player (auto-captions, transcript view, keyboard controls)
